Paul and Jean Blakey
Street Angels
Paul and Jean are the founders of Halifax Street Angels. The Street Angels scheme, which was pioneered in Halifax and launched November 2005, has contributed to over 50% reduction in violent crime in the town centre and is a model that is now used across the country. The idea is simple - a safe place and safe people ensuring others remain safe on Friday and Saturday nights between 9pm and 3am (a time when traditionally the town was perceived as a no go area).
Over fifty volunteers invest into making Street Angels a success and the project has won the support and praise of a wide range of agencies including Halifax and West Yorkshire Police, pubs and clubs, Halifax Town Centre Management, Calderdale Council, leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg, HRH Duke of York, former High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Roger Bowers, and those we help and support on the streets.
The project has helped show that the church in Halifax cares about the needs of the wider community and is commited to seeing God's Kingdom of love, hope, peace, crime reduction, safer and stronger communities become a reality not only in Halifax but towns and cities across the UK.
In July a Christian Nightlife Initiatives Network was launched as an informal way of networking similar projects together and helping new towns and cities launch Street Angels for themselves.

The format is very simple, churches working together to host week long mission events with live music, preaching (usually from speakers from other countries) and time for people to respond to God through prayer and ministry. The meetings have seen many people healed of sickness and various problems and issues.
Since forming a partnership with Dario, Paul and Jean along with others from FGBMFI in West Yorkshire, have hosted several Firesowers events in the UK including a 3 week mission in Yorkshire, Lancashire, the Midlands and London in 2008 and 2009. A report of the missions can be found here.
